Cashback, by far, is the best movie I've seen in the past couple of weeks. It's about Ben, a guy who suddenly stops sleeping after a breakup with his girlfriend, who finds out that he could freeze time. That's just the tip of the iceberg; there's so much more to this movie than that. It's smart and funny and just the right kind of sentimental in parts. If I were to have a perfect boyfriend in the form of a movie, this would be it. And no, it's not a chick flick.

I also happened to watch it on a day when I needed a bit of a mood boost, and I found it in this movie. Those who know me well know where those bits are; hearing them totally made my day (and pretty much confirmed to me that I am going the right way) and made me smile.

It stars Sean Biggerstaff, better known as Oliver Wood from the Harry Potter movies. He's all grown up now, less munchkin-cute, a bit more dorky-cute but in that sweet, kind of sexy way that Jake Gyllenhaal is.

So many good reasons to watch this movie!

More of The Jets, yay! I posted about them a couple of weeks back and posted some fast songs. This week it's all about the ballads. Really excellent ones, if I may say so. These five would be my favorites, mostly because they've got *ahem* memories attached to them. Some of them, anyway. They're also great for singing in the bathroom.

Gloria Estefan - I Still See Your Smile

I don't know why, but when I try to think of songs that I associate with happy times when I was a kid, I always go back to Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine and The Jets. And—horror of horrors—Menudo (and my long-time, decades upon decades-old crush on Ricky Martin).

It has also left me with most of Gloria Estefan's ballads forever burned in my memory. I'm all karaoke-ready when it comes to that. However, I really like this one a lot. If I had to pick just one torch song, it would be I Still See Your Smile.

It's no small wonder that I turned out this way, you know, kind of twisted. Heh.

Michael Nyman - The heart asks the pleasure first

The Piano. I was 14 or 15 at the time, and I think I got in because my mom was there. The finger-cutting freaked me out. And Harvey Keitel was teh ugly. Still is.

Edit: Now that I think of it, the first one might've been Pretty Woman (when I was about 10 or 11) or Belle Epoque (when I was 13 or 14). I'm not sure if they were really R-rated, though. I guess I started watching grown-up movies pretty early and it didn't occur to me until just now.

Ricky Martin circa mid-80's. Come, on I was like four or five then! I also have memories of singing If You're Not Here By My Side on a minus-one cassette tape. So retro! I still have it memorized two decades later... Teh embarrassment.
